A memorable journey combining nature, geology, culture and sustainable rail travel.

Saimaa Geopark

The journey begins from Helsinki by train to Lappeenranta and the Saimaa Geopark, exploring the Saimaa Canal, historic Rakuunamäki, the Fortress area and Hiekkalinna. After lunch, the journey continues to Imatra, where the group discovers Kruununpuisto and other fascinating Saimaa Geopark sites. If timing allows, there is a chance to see the Imatrankoski rapids show. Overnight in Imatra. The next day takes us through the beautiful Saimaa landscapes via Ruokolahti, Puumala and Pistohiekka to Mikkeli, with visits to Urpola Nature Centre, geological sites and the Muisti museum.

From Mikkeli, the journey continues to Salpausselkä Geopark, discovering charming villages, geological highlights, Virtaankoski, the spectacular Pulkkilanharju ridge, Vääksy Canal and Päijännetalo before arriving in Lahti. The following day is dedicated to Lahti and Hollola, combining cultural sights with the unique landscapes of the Salpausselkä ridges.

Next, the journey heads west by train to Parkano and the Lauhanvuori–Hämeenkangas Geopark. Guided walks lead through fascinating peatland landscapes, including Huidankeidas and Kauhaneva, followed by a visit to the Geopark Centre.

The adventure continues to the Lakeside Crater Geopark, where a guided tour reveals its remarkable geological heritage, together with Alajärvi’s Alvar Aalto architecture. An optional visit to Seinäjoki offers more Aalto-designed architecture.

From Seinäjoki, the train takes us north to Oulu and onward to Rokua UNESCO Global Geopark. Two days are devoted to exploring its unique glacial landscapes on foot, independently or with a wilderness guide.

The final day is spent in Oulu, the European Capital of Culture 2026, before boarding the night train back to Helsinki.
