SALPAUSSELKÄ UNESCO GLOBAL GEOPARK in the Lahti region
Geoparks are single, unified geographical areas that have sites and landscapes of international geological significance. Salpausselkä Geopark tells the story of the 10.000-year-old landforms, highlighting the connection between local culture, living surroundings, and geology, promoting local sites, products, and services.
VERLA in Kouvola area
Unesco World Heritage Site Verla offers a unique Board Mill museum, where you can visit on a guided tour or take a walk in the garden area with Kreidl couple, listening to stories about their lifestyle and the workers’ lives in Verla in 1900. Another guided tour, “Old houses tell stories”, is about decades of life in a mill village. Enjoy refreshments in the renovated villa or shop in the artisan shops.
SUOMENLINNA SEA FORTRESS, Helsinki
The Fortress is Finland’s first UNESCO World Heritage site. It is valued for its unique military architecture and how well it has been preserved and adapted for modern use. Fortress is a ferry ride from the city centre.
Built in the 18th century on a group of islands, it tells stories from Swedish, Russian, and Finnish eras. Massive stone walls, old cannons, and tunnels give the place a strong historical presence.
