Fishing in Lake Vesijärvi, Lake Päijänne, or the Kymijoki River

Tainionvirta River in Hartola and Sysmä
The beautiful Tainionvirta is a gently flowing river that winds through varied landscapes. Fishing is possible without wading; along the Ekonkoski shore there is a fully accessible nature trail, and several accessible rapids fishing spots have been built in the area—something quite rare in Finland.
Tainionvirta starts from Lake Jääsjärvi and flows into Lake Päijänne, with five rapids located on the Hartola side. The fishing season begins early in the spring. Due to the slow current, fishing is possible even when the water is still cold. Typical catches from Tainionvirta include trout and grayling, and their populations are supported through regular stocking.
Hammonjoki River in Hollola
The Hammonjoki River is located near the Hollola church village. It is fed by springs from the Salpausselkä ridges and flows into Lake Vesijärvi. The river is one of the few trout rivers in the Vesijärvi catchment area where both brown trout and brook trout reproduce naturally. Hammonjoki is especially well known among fly fishers for its brook trout population, although the most common catch is rainbow trout. Brown trout or grayling may also take the fly.
One reason for the river’s popularity as a fishing destination is how quickly its conditions change due to fluctuations in water level and clarity. As long as the water remains ice-free, fishing is possible year-round, though summer is the best time to fish the river.
